Going under the knife causes many people anxiety, as it should. Surgery should never be taken lightly, and even a simple procedure could lead to infection and other complications. However, you can calm some of that anxiety by acquiring more information about what will be done to you. Before any surgery, ask your surgeon these five questions to get some peace of mind in advance.
- Do I really need surgery? Before scheduling an operation, ask if it’s necessary and why you need it. Sometimes the reason is apparent, but surgery may cause side effects (like pain and scar tissue) and you should ensure that they’re worth it in order to achieve a positive end result. Knowing how the surgery will help you is a vital step in deciding to undergo an operation.
- What is your experience with this procedure? It’s often helpful for individuals to learn that their surgeon has plenty of experience with the procedure that they’re having done. With experience, your surgeon can tell you about the success rate of the procedure and how long it will take. You can discuss risks and what to expect as well.
- How do I prepare? It’s important to take a few steps in preparation for surgery so your body is better able to handle the stress. You may have to fast for a bit and you’ll most certainly have to avoid alcohol and smoking for 24 hours before the operation. Ask your surgeon what else you may need to do to prepare.
- What is the recovery process? Recovering from surgery can involve medication, time off work, specialized equipment, physical therapy and more. You should know what to expect upfront so you can prepare your home before surgery. This also gives you a chance to make childcare arrangements if necessary.
- How much will the surgery cost? Of course, the price tag of an operation is important as well. Ask your surgeon if health insurance is accepted and find out how much of the procedure will be covered. If the remaining out-of-pocket expenses are still high, talk to your surgeon about a payment plan.
